PTT MCC Biochem and Bio-Eco : Partners for Sustainability at Intania Chula Mini Marathon 2025
PTT MCC Biochem Company Limited (PTTMCC) and Bio-Eco Company Limited. are partnering with Intania Chula Mini Marathon (ICMM) 2025 to promote sustainability by providing paper cups coated with BioPBS, a biodegradable alternative to polyethylene. This collaboration underscores the companies' shared commitment to reducing plastic waste through innovative, eco-conscious solutions.
ICMM 2025 will utilize BioPBS-coated paper cups to minimize waste and environmental impact, aligning with the event's sustainability goals. Participants are encouraged to dispose of the cups in designated bins for proper handling.
BioPBS, replacing traditional polyethylene coatings, is not only environmentally friendly but also holds food-contact safety certifications from the US FDA, EU (10/2011), and Asia's JCII, as well as Halal and Kosher certifications. Furthermore, it meets both industrial and home compostability standards, including ASTM D6400 and EN 13432.
BioPBS: A Greener Choice for the Environment
BioPBS offers significant environmental benefits. Incinerating BioPBS produces 40% less CO₂ than Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) and 35% less than Polypropylene (PP), resulting in a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, BioPBS readily decomposes into biomass in landfills, leaving no chemical residues. Methane emissions from decomposition are minimal, depending on the availability of oxygen.
Giving BioPBS-Coated Cups a Second Life After ICMM 2025
Following the Intania Chula Mini Marathon 2025, used BioPBS-coated cups will be collected and managed through a collaboration with event organizers. A portion of these cups will be integrated into PTTMCC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and the Chula Zero Waste project, a long-term institutional partner.
PTTMCC's CSR program utilizes BioPBS-coated paper cups in tree-planting activities within local communities, such as the Ban Non Samre Community Enterprise in Rayong Province. This initiative promotes awareness of compostable packaging solutions and ensures proper composting of biodegradable materials, transforming waste into agricultural resources.
Chula Zero Waste, a sustainability initiative by Chulalongkorn University, advocates for effective waste management practices, including waste segregation and the use of biodegradable products. At ICMM 2025, Chula Zero Waste will collect a portion of the used cups for composting, creating a blend with dry leaves, or repurposing them as plant pots. The pots will be buried directly in the soil.
Additionally, BioPBS-coated cups used at the PTTMCC booth will be distributed to participants with a planting kit, demonstrating the circularity of BioPBS and encouraging participants to "close the loop" at home.
BioPBS: A Sustainable Solution for a Greener Future
BioPBS (a trademark of PTT MCC Biochem Company Limited) encompasses two main product categories: Bio-based Polybutylene Succinate (PBS) and Bio-based Polybutylene Succinate Adipate (PBSA). Derived from renewable resources like industrial corn, BioPBS is a biodegradable and compostable material with a bio-based content ranging from 36 to 99%, depending on the grade. As a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, BioPBS addresses the global plastic pollution crisis by naturally decomposing, rather than persisting in the environment for centuries.
BioPBS breaks down naturally through the action of temperature, humidity, and soil microbes, which utilize oxygen to efficiently decompose the material. In landfills, BioPBS can be disposed of alongside food waste, decomposing into natural components: carbon dioxide, water, and biomass. This makes BioPBS a valuable tool for waste reduction and environmental sustainability.
About PTTMCC
PTT MCC Biochem Company Limited (PTTMCC), a strategic joint venture between PTT Global Chemical (GC) and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (MCC), was formed to develop the innovative bioplastic, BioPBS. PTTMCC is dedicated to advancing the green industry globally, providing sustainable solutions through accessible bio-chemical innovations. Through continuous research and development, PTTMCC remains at the forefront of offering eco-conscious alternatives to traditional plastics.
A Partnership for a Sustainable Future
The collaboration between PTTMCC, Bio-Eco, and ICMM 2025 represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future. This event demonstrates the powerful impact of small changes, such as switching to compostable paper cups, in reducing plastic waste and protecting our planet. Together, PTTMCC, Bio-Eco, and ICMM 2025 are leading the way toward a greener, cleaner world. PTTMCC is proud to support this initiative and looks forward to collaborating with partners who share its commitment to environmental stewardship.
