Boost Performance and Sustainability with BioPBS FD72PM – High-MFR, Flexible, and Home-Compostable

Introduction

The global push for sustainable plastics is accelerating, driven by regulations such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the phase-out of single-use plastics. Compounders and brand owners are under increasing pressure to deliver solutions that combine performance, processability, and true end-of-life sustainability.

BioPBS FD72PM – Redefining Performance in Biodegradable Plastics

BioPBS FD72PM is a high-flow grade of polybutylene succinate adipate (PBSA) with an exceptional melt flow rate (MFR) of ~25 g/10 min. This allows easy processing in injection molding and extrusion—even for thin-wall or complex parts. Beyond processing advantages, BioPBS FD72PM offers certified home compostability, global food-contact compliance, and partially bio-based content, making it a breakthrough material that overcomes the common limitations of conventional bioplastics.

Key Properties

  • High MFR (~25 g/10 min): Excellent mold filling, dispersion with fillers, and energy-efficient processing.
  • Soft yet Tough: Tensile strength ~24 MPa, elongation at break ~450%, and strong impact resistance (~40 kJ/m² Izod), even at frozen conditions.
  • Dimensional Stability: Semi-crystalline structure ensures minimal warpage and shrinkage (~0.3%).
  • Processing Convenience: Runs on standard equipment at low temperatures (150–165 °C) with no pre-drying required.
  • Certified Bio-Based Content: Derived from renewable succinic acid.
  • Certified Compostability & Food Contact: OK Compost HOME, Industrial, BPI, GreenPla, USDA Biobased, DIN Certco, plus EU, US FDA, and Japan JHOSPA food-contact approvals.

Together, these features position BioPBS FD72PM as a high-quality PBSA that combines reliable performance with the environmental benefits of compostability.

Performance in Blends & Composites

BioPBS FD72PM performs exceptionally well in blends with PLA, PHAs, PHB copolymers (PHBH, PHBV) and in composites with talc, calcium carbonate, or natural fibers. These combinations create synergistic effects that balance flexibility, toughness, and thermal stability, making it suitable for packaging, fiber & nonwoven, cutlery, and agricultural applications.

  • Synergy with PHAs & PHB copolymers: PHAs and PHB copolymers (PHBH, PHBV) are strong but inherently brittle. Blending them with BioPBS FD72PM significantly improves flexibility and toughness, creating impact-resistant products while maintaining compostability. Compared to PHAs and PHB copolymers alone, BioPBS FD72PM offers superior flexibility, more uniform blends, and easier processing at lower temperatures. These advantages are particularly valuable in food packaging, cutlery, coffee capsules, fibers, and nonwovens, where BioPBS FD72PM also provides excellent seal strength at reduced sealing temperatures.
  • Reinforcement with Fillers: With its high MFR, BioPBS FD72PM easily accommodates high filler loadings (20–50%) while remaining moldable. For example, with 10% talc, PBSA retains ~200% elongation, whereas PHB loses almost all flexibility. Its strong thermal stability during compounding ensures consistent viscosity and reliable performance, which is critical for smooth and predictable processing.

Certified Compostable & Food-Safe

BioPBS FD72PM comes with a comprehensive global certification portfolio, providing confidence in both food-contact safety and eco-friendly sustainability.

  • OK Compost HOME (TÜV Austria): Biodegrades in home compost, not only in industrial facilities
  • Food-Contact Approvals: Compliant with EU (Reg. 10/2011), US FDA (FCN 2272), and Japan JHOSPA
  • Additional Certifications: OK Compost Industrial, BPI (US), OK biodegradable SOIL, GreenPla (Japan), USDA Biobased, DIN Certco

These certifications give compounders and brand owners confidence to use BioPBS FD72PM in food packaging, cutlery, coffee capsules, fibers, and nonwovens, while simplifying compliance for downstream users.

Conclusion & Outlook

BioPBS FD72PM offers compounders a versatile, high-performance platform: easy to process, compatible with blends and fillers, globally certified for compostability and food contact, and fully biodegradable. It enables innovation without compromising productivity or quality, helping businesses stay ahead of evolving regulations and consumer expectations.

Looking ahead, PTT MCC Biochem is developing next-generation grades such as BioPBS FD52PM, featuring an ultra-high MFR (~50 g/10 min) designed for thin-wall molding, high-speed extrusion, and nonwovens. Like FD72PM, FD52PM will remain food-safe and compostable, unlocking even more possibilities for sustainable product design.

With FD72PM available today and FD52PM on the horizon, BioPBS continues to set the benchmark for bioplastics that combine performance with true circularity, inviting compounders and brand owners to reimagine what’s possible with sustainable materials.
