Nantes Marathon is the sixth largest marathon event in France. It brings together more than 17,000 athletes, but also more than 1,200 volunteers supporting this 2 days event in the city of Nantes.
For this new 2018 edition, Nantes Marathon organizers desired to reduce the marathon’s impact on the environment by substituting plastic bottles and cups with a more environment-friendly solution: paper cups lined with BioPBSTM, 100% biodegradable plastic.
On January 1st 2020, disposable cups made of conventional plastic (polypropylene or polystyrene) will be banned in France, unless they are made of biobased plastics that are compostable in domestic compost.
Conventional paper cups are an alternative, but still contain between 10 and 15% of non-compostable polyethylene sealing film, necessary to ensure the manufacture and sealing of the cup.
Polyethylene is the material used to manufacture standard thin plastic bags, now banned in France (since 2016).
The BioPBSTM paper cups are a fully sustainable solution, since the sealing film is made of a biobased material that is completely biodegradable in a few weeks in industrial compost, and few months in soil, just like the cellulose that constitutes paper cups.
In 2017, PTT MCC Biochem, the producer of BioPBSTM, Supported the Audencia Triathlon by supplying 30,000 paper cups for the event that were composted in a large part by end of 2017 https://youtu.be/gwhR4XY98wU Audencia Triathlon is the largest triathlon in France and was held in La- Baule. Now, in support of the Nantes Marathon, PTT MCC Biochem will supply more than 100,000 BioPBSTM paper cups that will be used in Nantes and then collected, sorted and composted.
Specific collection points along the way will be managed by Nantes Marathon organization to ensure the proper collection and sorting of used BioPBSTM paper cups. After the event, the collected cups will be ground and composted at our partner Baugeois Compost (49) which will take care of the efficient organic recycling of paper cups in about 10 weeks (total disappearance).
Environmental benefit of BioPBSTM paper cups.
For most people, paper cups are considered harmless to the environment because the paper used to make a paper cup deteriorates quickly in the soil. However, paper cups must be coated with non-biodegradable and persistent plastic (Polyethylene) in order for the cup to hold liquid.
The BioPBSTM paper cup is a 100% biodegradable solution.
In domestic compost or in soil, as temperature is about 20-30°C, BioPBSTM paper cups will generally biodegrade in few months, depending on temperature and the compost management ( mixing, oxygen contribution, nature of soil etc...) Full biodegradation is generally observed within a year.
In industrial composting facility such as Baugeois Compost (49), where temperature can reach up to 80°C, paper cups will fully biodegrade in about 10 weeks. The compost made by Baugeois compost will then be sold to individuals, garden centers, communities and other professionals, ensuring the final organic recycling of the paper cups used during the Marathon.
BioPBS-based wastes are not intended to be managed apart from official and agreed waste management streams. They biodegrade faster (few weeks or months) than conventional plastics (decades or centuries), even at ambient temperature. Composting is thus very appropriate to BioPBS- wastes. Wastes, including BioPBS-based wastes, must be managed properly and according to local regulations.
